    <subfield code="a">Birds Landing Store erected in 1875 by Frank and Dinkelspiel. Town first known as New Jerusalem. John Bird erected a grain warehouse and; wharf on Montezuma Slough in 1869. Bird first postmaster in 1875 and; the village became known as Birds Landing. In 1880 Bird bought half interest in the store and for a quarter century Bird and Dinkelspiel conducted a general merchandise business there. Ownership then passed to J. and E. Bird, sons of the pioneer. Then occupied and operated by Everly Benjamin.</subfield>
