Abstract: AMUSING NOW and PRACTICAL THEN - If an employer today told a young man to go out into the back yard coal shed and bring in a bucket of coal to keep the fire going, he would probably accuse the employer of indulging in some kind of hallucinatory drug. But, believe it or not, that was the first order I received when I started to work for the Vacaville Reporter back in 1924.
