The History of '77, and the Potential for '78 / Rico, John [939] [RICO-1978-939]
GOODBYE '77, HELLO '78 - Well, it has only been a few days since Christmas and it may be time to start thinking about that present for the Mrs. for next Christmas. There are only 354 days left for you to do the shopping. This year Christmas falls on Monday; in 1979 it is on Tuesday and the in 1980 it jumps over to Thursday.

Never Before Was Drought a Vacaville Problem / Rico, John [940] [RICO-1978-940]
THE RAINS HAVE ARRIVED - After two exceptionally dry seasons, rains in substantial quantities have arrived in the Vacaville area. With storms reminiscent of those experienced here in our yesteryear, it is again gratifying to see water standing in open fields, creeks flowing with runoff from the hills and mountains around Vacaville, and storm drains in some sections of the city failing to take care of their chores.

What Would Happen Without the American Farmer / Rico, John [941] [RICO-1978-941]
UNCLE SAM'S BACKBONE - When Edwin Markham walked from his Lagoon Valley home to the schools in Vacaville before the turn of the century, he saw first-hand the toiling farmers in the area, which no doubt inspired him in later years to write his immortal poem, "The Man With the Hoe."

They Did Their Thing for the Glory of Vacaville / Rico, John [942] [RICO-1978-942]
PUSH-EM-UP TONY AND HIS BROTHERS - Baseball record books frequently refer to the triple combination of Tinkers to Evers to Chance. While this trio may have been prominent on the national scene, back in the days of "little old Vacaville" there was a combination which could have read: Zupo to Zupo to Zupo to Zupo to Zupo to Zupo to Zupo, and during the same era here you could add Burton to Burton to Burton to Burton to Burton. This may all sound like a broken record but it actually was possible here quite a few years back.

EPITAPHS FOR THE LIVING - This may sound as a crude statement; but I find more comfort in writing or hearing about epitaphs for the living, rather than the cold inscriptions chiseled into a chunk of stone.

History Overlooked Some Vacaville Names / Rico, John [936] [RICO-1979-936]
BITS OF NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE IN OUR PAST - Quite often the unpublished quirks or idiosyncrasies of individuals in our past have escaped historians or news writers. It should be interesting to go back, pick out some of these people, and relate a few squibs which made these people a bit unique to their neighbors and friends. Constable Joe Stadtfeld is mentioned in this article..

Education Was Never Meant to Be Simple / Rico, John [935] [RICO-1979-935]
OUR CHANGING SCHOOL TIMES - Judging from the number of Letters to the Editor appearing in this newspaper giving pro and con observations about our school system, and about some of the individuals responsible for the operation of these schools, it would seem as though the educational facilities in Vacaville were in a sorry mess.

OUR CHANGING TRAVEL HABITS - Now with gasoline in short supply it may be wise to turn back the clock and review some of our traveling habits. A 'Wet' Vacaville During a 'Dry' USA / Rico, John [924] [RICO-1979-924]
"STUFF" THAT CAME TO PASS - In the early days of the fruit industry in Vacaville, ranchers took advantage of the virgin soil and planted some of their acreages to vineyards. From these vines came luscious sun-ripened, sugar-sweet grapes which found their way to fresh market. But, many of these ranchers preserved their annual ritual of pressing some of these grapes into a quantity of wine.

Events will prove that as far back as 1858 there were attempts made to provide a library service to the few people who resided here. The Women's Christian Temperance Union also had a part in seeking to provide such facilities here.
