2001: A Time Odyssey / Rico, John [CaVaHC-AROUNDVACA-750]
Thirty years ago today this column, this newspaper, was placed in a time capsule, set in a cornerstone at the Vacaville branch of Central California Savings and Loan. It's a little like writing one's own obituary, not knowing what might take place during the unknown of tomorrow and of all the tomorrows that have gone into the past 30 years - from 1971 to 2001. .

A Glance Into Reporter's Past / Rico, John [CaVaHC-AROUNDVACA-754]
AMUSING NOW and PRACTICAL THEN - If an employer today told a young man to go out into the back yard coal shed and bring in a bucket of coal to keep the fire going, he would probably accuse the employer of indulging in some kind of hallucinatory drug. But, believe it or not, that was the first order I received when I started to work for the Vacaville Reporter back in 1924. .

Chinatown Nostalgia in Vacaville / Rico, John [CaVaHC-AROUNDVACA-759]
THE ROAR AND THE SMELL - Back about 40 years, when Vacaville fruit growers sought dependable workers, they invariably selected Chinese, who drifted into the area from the depleted gold mine jobs of the Mother Lode. These Chinese workers, who had departed their native soil without female companions, dreamed of the day when they could accumulate enough money to go back to their homes, but this seldom occurred. .

From Apricots to Homes / Rico, John [CaVaHC-AROUNDVACA-762]
The recent annexation of nearly 200 acres of prime agricultural lands to the city of Vacaville on Pleasants Valley Road (extension of Orchard Ave.) will eventually spell the end of an area which figured prominently in the agricultural past of Vacaville. Shortly after the Vaca and Pena families came to this valley, the area was known as UIatis Valley, named after the Indians bearing that name. [...]

Interesting Old Stuff? / Rico, John [CaVaHC-AROUNDVACA-742]
The first time that residents of Solano County had an opportunity to vote on the question of "wet" or dry" as far as intoxicating liquors were concerned, was far back in April, 1855. County residents, only a handful, went to the nine polls in the county, and cast 378 "no" votes, as compared to 143 "yes" votes. The residents of the county chose to keep their intoxicating liquors. [...]

Number Please / Rico, John [CaVaHC-AROUNDVACA-757]
Automation has decreed oblivion for the telephone operator whose kindly voice of "Number, Please," delighted many a phone user in our Yesteryear. Molded from a die that has long been discarded, these operators were indoctrinated with a sense of not only responsibility to their chores, but provided a human touch wherever it may have been needed. As a tribute to all of these women of that era we pick one who still resides in Vacaville to carry the banner for the lot. [...]

Quotes From The Past / Rico, John [CaVaHC-AROUNDVACA-761]
Quite often in this column I have made reference to Vacaville's past fame in the fruit growing industry, and this is no exaggeration. Vacaville at one time was perhaps the most pronounced fresh fruits growing area in all of the United States, and easterners referred to the small community much in the same way as they referred to the gold fields of the Klondike. But that was in our yesteryear. [...]

Recorded for History / Rico, John [CaVaHC-AROUNDVACA-743]
One of the great meticulous works of recording Vacaville's past history should be credited to the late Edward J. Wickson, who in 1888 went to great lengths to research the area's past and to record for posterity much of interest. To the people of Vacaville Wickson's California Illustrated No. [...]

Statues Are Impressive / Rico, John [CaVaHC-AROUNDVACA-752]
On a recent trip to Europe, and especially in Italy, I was fascinated with the number of historical monuments, many of them immortalizing individuals. These statues are all over the place and in proper surroundings add greatly to the atmosphere of the particular city or town. .
